9 January 2026 — Viral rumor & Trump’s renewed push
A rumor spreads online that Denmark renamed Greenland “Epstein Island” to stop Trump from talking about it. Snopes debunks it, noting it circulated after Trump again said the U.S. needs to acquire Greenland “from the standpoint of national security.”
10 January 2026 — Trump: “Whether they like it or not”
Trump makes his most aggressive statement yet:
“We are going to do something on Greenland whether they like it or not.”
He adds: “If we don’t do it, Russia or China will take over Greenland, and we’re not going to have Russia or China as a neighbor.”
He also warns: “I would like to make a deal the easy way, but if we don’t do it the easy way we’re going to do it the hard way.”
This is widely interpreted as a threat of possible military action.
13 January 2026 — White House: Action within ‘weeks or months’
USA Today interviews Trump’s Arctic commissioner Thomas Dans:
- “There could be meaningful U.S. action related to the Arctic island within ‘weeks or months.’”
- Trump’s desire to annex Greenland “will not be thwarted.”
This signals that the administration is preparing concrete steps.
15 January 2026 — White House graphic: U.S. vs Russia/China
The White House posts a graphic framing Greenland’s future as a choice between:
- alignment with the U.S., or
- exposure to Russian and Chinese influence.
Trump again stresses: Greenland is “strategically crucial” and essential for U.S. defense planning.
This escalates the geopolitical narrative.
16 January 2026 — Trump threatens tariffs
Trump tells reporters: “We need Greenland for national security.”He adds:“I may impose tariffs on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland.”
Anything less than the island being in U.S. hands would be ‘unacceptable’.
This is the first time Trump links tariffs + territorial control explicitly.
17 January 2026 — Trump announces sanctions on Europe
Trump escalates further, announcing sanctions and February tariffs on eight European allies: “Until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase [of Greenland].”
He argues: “We have subsidized Denmark, and all of the Countries of the European Union… for many years.”
